Jennifer Kate Hudson was born in Chicago, Illinois, U.S., on September 12, 1981, is an American actress and singer.

Young Jennifer Hudson started singing with gospel choirs at her local church, at the age of 7.

She gained exposure and a fan base as a finalist during the third season of American Idol (2004).

She made her big screen debut in romantic musical drama film Dreamgirls (2006) in role as Effie White, for which she won the Academy Award, a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress.

She landed her Broadway debut in musical "The Color Purple" (2015) in role as Shug Avery.

She released her first studio album "Jennifer Hudson" in 2008, for which she won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album.

I never gave up hope of playing Effie. They'd talk to me and then look at other people and then come back to me. . .but I always had the faith. I had to separate myself from the process and not think about it too much or I'd go crazy. JH regarding her "Dreamgirls" role.

I just tried to live in the moment and be natural, as if there were no cameras there. Maybe it's because I felt like singing and movies acting are related. When you're singing you have to sell it. You act out that song; you have to know the meaning and purpose of it. I let that guide me.
