time by the American Film Institute. Monroe has often been cited as a pop and
cultural icon as well as an eminent American beauty symbol. Was born in the Los
Angeles . Voted Empire's (UK) " beautiful female movie star of all time " in 1995.
Ex-husband Joe DiMaggio put fresh roses at her memorial site, for numerous years
after her death. Her first modeling job paid only five dollars. There are over 600

Personal Quotes

A beauty-symbol becomes a thing, I just hate being a thing. If I'm going to be a symbol
of something I'd rather have it beauty than some other things we've got symbols of.

In Hollywood a girl's virtue is much less important than her hairdo. You're judged
by how you look, not by what you are. Hollywood's a place where they'll pay you a
thousand dollars for kiss, and fifty cents for your soul. I know, because I turned
down the first offer often enough and held out for the fifty.

My illusions didn't have anything to do with being a fine movies actress. I knew how
third rate I was. I could actually feel my lack of talent, as if it were cheap clothes I
was wearing inside. But my God, how I wanted to learn, to change, to improve!

Personal Quotes

Actresses go on for a long time and there are always marvelous parts to play.

Some critics saw fit to say that I was a great movies actress. I thought that was a
foolish, wicked thing to say because it put such an onus and such a responsibility
onto me, which I simply wasn't able to carry.

Scorpios burn themselves out and eat themselves up and they are careless about
themselves - like me. I swing between happiness and misery and I cry easily. I
am a mixture of my mother's determination and my father's optimism. I am part
prude and part non-conformist and I say what I think and don't dissemble. I am
a mixture of French, Irish and Yorkshire, and perhaps that's what it all is.
